Forest, Friendship, and Fresh Air: Inside Our Montana Glamping Retreat experience
Discover how our Montana glamping retreat brings together wellness, mindfulness, and nature-inspired renewal for groups and creative souls alike.
As our 2025 glamping season came to a close last week, the forest quiets and so do we — packing up, tidying trails, and reflecting on another year of unforgettable moments. From starry nights to morning coffee on cabin porches, this season was full of laughter, learning, and connection.
Even after an all five-star season, we’re not settling. Behind the scenes, we’re planning new builds (including a brand-new cabin coming in 2026!), refining what we offer, and creating even more opportunities for groups to unplug, unwind, and grow together.
One of our favorite highlights?
Co-hosting a Ganja Glampout retreat that truly captured the spirit of connection in nature — a weekend gathering where friends, strangers, and cannabis enthusiasts came together to recharge, reflect, and reconnect under Montana’s wide-open skies. The reviews that followed reminded us how powerful shared experiences in the forest can be.
Here is one from Brittany M:
“I had the absolute joy of attending Liv’s Leaves Ganja Glampout in the summer of 2025, a women’s weed and yoga retreat hosted at The Hohnstead in Montana. While the retreat itself was run by Liv (and wow, she created something incredible), the venue made it next-level. The Hohnstead was the perfect partner for this kind of gathering. Two amazing small businesses coming together to create one magical experience — and I’m so glad I got to be a part of it!
Ganja Glampout Retreat by Liv’s Leaves at The Hohnstead Glamping Cabins
The Hohnstead is unlike anywhere I’ve ever stayed. It's an adults-only, dog-friendly, cannabis-friendly property nestled in the Montana woods just outside Missoula. The vibe is a total grown-up summer camp with cozy, tiny cabins, open-air gathering spaces, and peaceful trails all around. I stayed in the A-frame cabin and absolutely loved its charm. It was perfect for sharing with my best friend and had everything we needed to feel comfortable and at ease.
Garrett and Alla, the owners of The Hohnstead, are amazing hosts. Garrett picked us up from the airport, gave us a local tour (including a fun dispensary stop), and by the end of the drive, we already felt like friends. He kept himself busy during the retreat since it was a women’s event, but whenever we did see him, he was kind, funny, and genuinely welcoming.
Alla was a huge part of the retreat experience. She has this calming presence and an intuitive sense of when and how to show up. She guided us on a nature walk that helped us see the land in a whole new way. She talked about following animal trails, listening to the silence, and connecting to the natural rhythms around us. It helped me slow down and really take it all in. Watching her move through the space with ease and respect was honestly inspiring. She also took most of the photos at our retreat, this way we didn’t have to worry about missing capturing moments ourselves.
The shared kitchen and common areas were cozy and welcoming. It felt like the kind of place where you could hang out barefoot with a cup of tea, cook a shared meal, or just sit in silence and breathe in the fresh Montana air.
If you're searching for a Montana tiny cabin retreat, or a place to unplug that is cannabis-friendly, dog-friendly, and built with care, The Hohnstead should be at the top of your list. It’s thoughtful, peaceful, and full of heart. I can’t wait to come back.

Couples in the Wild: Why Nature Retreats Spark Romance and Mindfulness
Discover how couples and groups can strengthen connection, boost wellness, and spark adventure while in the woods.
Sometimes the best way to reconnect with your partner isn’t over dinner in a crowded restaurant or a quick trip to a concert in the big city—it’s in the quiet of the woods. There’s something about being surrounded by trees, listening to the rustle of the wind, and watching the stars emerge that slows life down and brings couples closer.
But beyond the romance, there’s science behind why being in nature is so good for your relationship, your wellness, and your overall sense of self.
Why Nature is So Good for Relationships
Research shows that time outdoors isn’t just pleasant—it’s powerful.
A 2019 study published in Frontiers in Psychology found that just 20 minutes in nature significantly lowers cortisol levels, the body’s stress hormone. Lower stress = fewer distractions and more patience with each other.
Spending time outside improves mood and boosts creativity, according to research from the Journal of Environmental Psychology. Happier people tend to communicate better and feel more connected.
Studies on couples’ wellness show that shared activities in nature (like hiking or stargazing) increase feelings of closeness and satisfaction in relationships. The simple act of exploring together builds teamwork and trust.
In other words: nature helps you slow down, show up, and strengthen your bond—all while giving your mind and body the reset they need.
Romantic Activities for Couples in the Woods
If you’re looking for ways to turn a forest getaway into a truly memorable couples retreat, here are some activities that nurture connection and support wellness:
1. Stargazing Under the Big Sky
A 2014 study from Psychological Science found that experiencing awe—like gazing at a star-filled sky—expands perspective and makes people feel more connected. For couples, that means deeper conversations and shared wonder.
2. Couples Hike with a Picnic
Hiking not only strengthens your body but also reduces anxiety and depression symptoms, according to research from Stanford University. Pair that with a picnic in a scenic spot, and you’ve got both nourishment and bonding in one.
3. Cooking Together, Cabin-Style
Preparing a simple meal outdoors together encourages teamwork and mindfulness. Studies link mindful eating with reduced stress and improved mood—making it the perfect couple’s ritual.
4. Partner Yoga or Meditation in Nature
Yoga and meditation lower blood pressure and improve emotional regulation. Practicing together outdoors multiplies those benefits and creates a calming, intimate experience.
5. Campfire Conversations
The crackle of a fire has been shown to lower blood pressure and promote relaxation, according to evolutionary psychology research. Add in marshmallows and storytelling, and you’ve got a recipe for connection.
6. Photography Adventures Together
Taking photos in nature sparks creativity, and studies show creative activities reduce stress and boost overall well-being. Plus, you’ll leave with memories to relive together.
7. Mindfulness Moments in the Forest
Whether it’s a guided breathwork session, a shared tea ritual, or a few quiet minutes of forest bathing, mindfulness practices help couples ground themselves and feel present together. It’s a beautiful way to deepen emotional intimacy.
Bonus Idea: The Hohnstead Scavenger Hunt Adventure
If you’re looking for something truly unique to do together, our signature Scavenger Hunt (reserve separately or included for all cabin guests) blends fun, challenge, and discovery into one unforgettable experience.
This isn’t your average clue hunt—it’s an outdoor adventure course that takes you and your partner (or your group) across the property. Along the way, you’ll:
Hike forest trails with the help of an old school map
Test your aim in archery with friendly competition
Split wood the old-fashioned way for strength and skill
Pan for gold and see what treasures you can uncover
And more surprise challenges designed to make you laugh, bond, and team up
It’s part scavenger hunt, part wilderness challenge, and fully designed to leave you with memories that last long after your retreat ends. Couples walk away feeling more connected, and groups finish with stronger teamwork and plenty of inside jokes.

“Me, my husband and our dog had such a lovely time at the Hohnstead! Not tooo far away from Missoula, but far away enough for a little getaway! We LOVED that the property was dog-friendly and our pup had the best time roaming around our cabin in the woods. We were celebrating our 8-year anniversary and had the best time. We loved being able to use the communal kitchen to cook our dinner and store our food, but still having the amenities of coffee and a butane stovetop in the cabin. You can tell the hosts put SO SO much thought into making sure their guests are taken care of. The hot tub was also a plus (: We will definitely be back and will recommend to family and friends!
